The Unique Landscape of High Ridge
High Ridge sits on a special type of land formation. It's like a high area with nine different "arms" or ridges. This area is part of something called the Burlington Escarpment. The very highest point of the ridge is near the Senior Center. This is just north of High Ridge Boulevard.
Many small streams flow from this high ground. These include Antire Creek, Rock Creek, and Sugar Creek. The land here is surrounded by two important rivers. The Big River is to the west. The Meramec River is to the west, north, and east. The soil in High Ridge has a lot of chert, which makes it hard for traditional farming. Because of this, people in the past grew fruit trees, strawberries, and blackberries. They also grew other produce to sell in St. Louis.
The total area of High Ridge is about 3.8 square miles (9.85 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
A Glimpse into High Ridge's Past
The community of High Ridge got its name because of its high elevation. A post office was opened in High Ridge way back in 1856. This shows that people have been living and working in this area for a long time.
