Hillsboro is a city in Missouri, United States. It is also the county seat of Jefferson County. This means it's where the main government offices for the county are located. In 2020, about 3,473 people lived in Hillsboro. This was an increase from 2,821 people in 2010.

History of Hillsboro
Hillsboro was first called Monticello. It was officially planned out in 1839. The name Monticello came from the home of President Thomas Jefferson.
Later, the name Monticello had to be changed. This was because the U.S. postal service already had another post office in Missouri with a very similar name. So, they changed it to Hillsboro. This new name is the English version of the Italian word "Monticello." A post office has been open in Hillsboro since 1838.
Two important places in Hillsboro are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Thomas C. Fletcher House and the Sandy Creek Covered Bridge.
