History of Hiles

Early Land Surveys

The area that is now the Town of Hiles was first mapped in the summer of 1851. A team working for the United States government did this important survey.

Around the start of 1852, another team marked all the corners of the land sections. They walked through the woods and swamps, using a special chain and compass to measure everything.

The surveyor who led this work wrote down what the land was like:

  • The land was mostly flat.
  • About half of it was a swamp with tamarack trees.
  • The other half was also low, wet land.
  • It was very hard to grow crops there, even with drainage.
  • The whole area was covered with thick trees like pine, tamarack, maple, and birch.
  • There was also a very thick undergrowth of alder and witch hazel.
  • The soil was a type of hard clay called hardpan.
  • A river called Fox River (also known as the East Branch of the Black River) ran through the middle of the area. It was about 100 links (about 66 feet) wide and two feet deep, with a fast current.

Town's Founding

The Town of Hiles was officially created in 1901. It was named after a businessman named George Hiles. He was a land speculator, which means he bought and sold large amounts of land. Before 1900, George Hiles owned half of all the land in the town!
