Hinksey Hill is a lovely hill and a place where people live, located about 3 kilometers (2 miles) south of the city of Oxford. It's part of a small local area called South Hinksey civil parish, which is like a small community with its own local council. This hill used to be part of Berkshire county. However, in 1974, a big change in local government moved it to Oxfordshire county.

Getting Around Hinksey Hill

At the bottom of Hinksey Hill, you'll find a busy road junction called Hinksey Hill Interchange. This is where the Abingdon By-Pass connects with the Southern By-Pass Road. A "by-pass" is a road built around a town or city to help traffic avoid the busy center.

The road that goes up Hinksey Hill was once the main A34 road. But in the 1970s, a new by-pass was built around Abingdon. After that, the road up the hill became a quieter, local road.

Exploring the Top of Hinksey Hill

At the very top of Hinksey Hill, there used to be a private golf course. This golf course belonged to a person called Lord Berkeley of Berkeley Castle. He had his own special golf course on nearby Boars Hill.

Today, this land is no longer a golf course. Instead, it has been turned into a wonderful nature reserve. It's a fantastic place for people to walk their dogs and enjoy the outdoors.

Views from the Hill

From the top of Hinksey Hill, you can see amazing views of the city of Oxford. These views have been admired for a long time. A famous artist named William Turner painted the Oxford skyline from Hinksey Hill around the year 1840. His paintings show how beautiful the city looks from this spot.
