Hiranagar is a town located near Kathua city in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It serves as a "tehsil headquarters," which means it's an important administrative center for the local area. The town is named after Raja Hira Singh, who was the son of Raja Dhyan Singh and the nephew of the famous Raja Gulab Singh.

History of Hiranagar

Raja Hira Singh, the nephew of Maharaja Gulab Singh, is believed to have started the town of Hiranagar. He named it after himself when he was given control of the jagir (a special land area) of Jasrota.

Raja Hira Singh also fixed up the Jasmergarh Fort. This fort is located between two streams, Tarnah and Bein Nallahs. Before 1947, the fort was home to the tehsil office and other government buildings. Later, these offices were moved to Hiranagar town.

Hiranagar is located at 32°27′N 75°16′E / 32.45°N 75.27°E / 32.45; 75.27. The town is about 308 meters (1010 feet) above sea level. This is its average elevation.

People of Hiranagar

According to the 2011 Indian Census, the Hiranagar area has a total population of 8,294 people. Out of these, 4,526 are males and 3,768 are females.

Jasmergarh Fort

The Jasmergarh Fort is just outside Hiranagar town, close to the border with Pakistan. King Hira, who the town is named after, built this fort.

Inside the fort, there is a well-known temple dedicated to Mata Kali. The Jasmergarh Fort is considered one of the important historical places in the Kathua District.

Getting Around Hiranagar

Hiranagar is well-connected to bigger cities like Jammu, Srinagar, and New Delhi. This is thanks to the Srinagar-Kanyakumari Highway (NH-44), which passes through the area.

Hiranagar also has its own railway station. This station connects the town to other cities that have train services, making travel easier for residents.
