Hiroshi Katayama (片山 洋, Katayama Hiroshi, born May 28, 1940) is a former Japanese football player. He was a talented defender who played for the Japan national team. His father, Yutaka Katayama, was a well-known figure who used to be the president of Nissan USA.

Playing for Clubs

Hiroshi Katayama was born in Meguro, Tokyo, on May 28, 1940. After finishing his studies at Keio University, he joined the Mitsubishi Motors football team in 1963.

Joining the Japan Soccer League

In 1965, his team, Mitsubishi Motors, became part of the new Japan Soccer League. Katayama helped his team win the championship in 1969. He also helped them win the Emperor's Cup in 1971. He played for Mitsubishi Motors until he retired in 1972. During his time in the league, he played 107 games and scored 3 goals. He was recognized as one of the best players, being selected for the "Best Eleven" team for five years in a row, from 1966 to 1970.

Playing for Japan

Hiroshi Katayama first played for the Japan national team on August 2, 1961. At that time, he was still a student at Keio University. His first game was against the Malaya team.

Olympic Games Achievements

Katayama was chosen to represent Japan in two Olympic Games. He played in the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo. He also played in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He played in every match at both Olympics. At the 1968 Olympics, his team won a Bronze Medal, which was a great achievement! In 2018, this successful team was honored by being selected for the Japan Football Hall of Fame.

Other International Games

He also played for Japan at the 1966 Asian Games. His last game for Japan was in 1971 during the qualification matches for the 1972 Summer Olympics. Japan did not qualify for those Olympics that year. Overall, he played 38 games for Japan between 1961 and 1971.

In 2007, Hiroshi Katayama was honored for his amazing career. He was selected to be part of the Japan Football Hall of Fame.
