Holdingford was first planned out in the 1870s. A man named Randolph Holding chose the spot near a place where people could cross a river (a "ford").
A post office has been open in Holdingford since 1872. This helped the community grow and connect with other places.

The bridge is part of the Lake Wobegon Trail. This trail is popular for walking, biking, and running.
Every May, a big running event called the Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon starts in Holdingford. Runners go 26.2 miles south on the trail to St. Joseph.
