Holly J. Mitchell was born on September 7, 1964, in Los Angeles, California. She is an American politician who helps lead Los Angeles County. She is a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
Before this, Mitchell was a State Senator for California. She represented the 30th Senate District from 2013 to 2020. This area includes places like Culver City and parts of Downtown Los Angeles. She also served in the California State Assembly before becoming a State Senator. Mitchell is part of the California Legislative Black Caucus. In 2016, she became the first African American to lead the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee. In this role, she helped manage California's state budgets.

Holly Mitchell's Early Career
Before working in the California government, Holly Mitchell was the CEO of a group called Crystal Stairs. This group helps families. She worked there for seven years. She also helped the Senate Health Committee and worked to support laws for people in need.
Making Laws in California
As a State Senator, Holly Mitchell was the first African American to lead the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee. She helped manage state budgets that were worth over $200 billion.
The CROWN Act: Hair Discrimination Law
In 2019, Mitchell created and supported a very important law called the CROWN Act (SB 188). CROWN stands for "Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair." This law makes it illegal to treat someone unfairly because of their hair style or hair texture. This includes natural hairstyles like braids, twists, and locs.
This was the first law of its kind in the United States. It passed easily in California's government and became law on July 3, 2019. The CROWN Act has inspired other states to pass similar laws.
Helping Los Angeles County
In 2020, Holly Mitchell ran for a spot on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. She won the election. Her win was special because it meant that for the first time, all members of the Board of Supervisors were women. This board helps make big decisions for Los Angeles County.
