She is a member of the Democratic Party. Before becoming a U.S. representative, she served in the California State Senate. She also worked in the California State Assembly.

Early Life and Education

Sydney Kamlager-Dove was born in Chicago, Illinois. Her mother is actress Cheryl Lynn Bruce. Her stepfather is the famous artist Kerry James Marshall.

She went to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. There, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. She also earned a Master's degree in arts management from Carnegie Mellon University.

Career Highlights

In 1996, Sydney Kamlager-Dove worked as a spokesperson for a group called the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC). This group focuses on public art in Venice, California. A year later, she became the public art director for the same organization.

After leaving SPARC, she worked for actor Delroy Lindo. She also worked as a public affairs director for Crystal Stairs. This is a non-profit group that helps with child care.

In 2015, she ran for a position on the board of trustees for the Los Angeles Community College District. She won this election on March 3, 2015. This role involved helping to guide the community colleges in Los Angeles.
