Early Life and Education
Delroy Lindo was born in 1952 in Lewisham, London, England. His parents were from Jamaica and moved to the UK in the 1950s. His mother worked as a nurse, and his father had different jobs. Delroy grew up in Eltham and went to Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys. He first became interested in acting when he was a child. He performed in a school play about the Nativity.
As a teenager, Delroy and his mother moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. When he was 16, they moved again to San Francisco, USA. At 24, Delroy began studying acting at the American Conservatory Theater. He finished his studies there in 1979.
Acting Career
Delroy Lindo's first movie role was in the Canadian comedy Find the Lady in 1976. He also played an army sergeant in More American Graffiti (1979).
For about ten years, starting in the early 1980s, Delroy focused more on theater. In 1982, he performed on Broadway in "Master Harold"...and the Boys. By 1988, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in August Wilson's play Joe Turner's Come and Gone.
Delroy returned to films in 1990 with Salute of the Jugger. He then worked with director Spike Lee in several movies. He played Woody Carmichael in Crooklyn (1994). He also played a tough gangster in Malcolm X. Later, he starred in Clockers.
Other movies he starred in include Get Shorty (1995) and Ransom (1996). In 1996, he played baseball player Satchel Paige in Soul of the Game.
In 1998, Delroy played the explorer Matthew Henson in the TV movie Glory & Honor. This film showed Henson's journey with Commander Robert Peary to the Geographic North Pole. Delroy won a Satellite Award for his performance. He also had a small, uncredited role in the 1995 film Congo. He played an angel in the comedy A Life Less Ordinary (1997). He even voiced a character named Gabriel in an episode of The Simpsons.
In the British film Wondrous Oblivion (2003), Delroy played Dennis Samuels. This character was a Jamaican immigrant father in London in the 1950s. Delroy said he made this film to honor his own parents. They had also moved to London around that time.
Delroy has continued to work in television. He was a main actor in the crime drama The Chicago Code (2011). He also starred in the fantasy series Believe (2014). From 2017 to 2021, he played Adrian Boseman in the legal drama The Good Fight.
In recent years, Delroy has appeared in action films like Point Break (2015). He also starred in the drama Battlecreek (2017) and the horror film Malicious (2018). In 2021, he played Bass Reeves in The Harder They Fall. His role in Da 5 Bloods (2020) earned him many awards and great reviews.
In 2023, Delroy starred in the comedy series Unprisoned on Hulu. Critics praised his performance. In 2025, he played Delta Slim in the film Sinners.

Delroy is also developing a screenplay for his first film as a director. It will be about the Windrush generation, which refers to people who immigrated to the UK from Caribbean countries.
Personal Life
Delroy Lindo married Nashormeh in 1990. They moved to Oakland, California, in 1996. They preferred the San Francisco Bay Area over Los Angeles. Their son, Damiri, was born in 2001.
Delroy is a big fan of football and supports Manchester United.
He became very interested in the history of the Windrush generation. This was partly because of his mother's stories and his role in the film Wondrous Oblivion.
