Building a Historic Church
A plan to build a new church in central Leeds was first suggested in 1714. However, it did not happen because there were not enough people willing to pay for it. In 1722, Lady Elizabeth Hastings of Ledston helped restart the project. She had the support of important merchants in the city. The first stone of Holy Trinity Church was laid on August 27, 1722.
Who Designed Holy Trinity?
For a long time, people thought the architect of the church was William Halfpenny. But later, it was discovered that his designs were never used. The real architect was William Etty from York. A letter from 1723 mentioned that Mr. Etty had drawn the church's south front. He also made a wooden model for the builders to follow. This model was used for many years.
The Church's Steeple
William Halfpenny's original design for the church's west tower included a square, open area with an obelisk-shaped spire. Etty did not plan for a spire. However, a wooden one was added later by someone unknown. This first spire blew down in 1839. It was then replaced by the taller stone steeple you see today. This new steeple has three parts that get smaller as they go up. It was designed by architect Robert Dennis Chantrell.
Holy Trinity Today
In 2020, the church building went through a big renovation. This update made it a good place for a midweek ministry for people working in the city center. In 2021, St George's Church took over the responsibility for the City Centre Mission at Holy Trinity. The Reverend Josh Lees is currently the Vicar at Holy Trinity. Holy Trinity works together with two other churches: St George's and St Augustine's Church, Wrangthorn.
