Geography of Honey Grove
Honey Grove is in the central part of North Texas. It is in eastern Fannin County. The city is about 16 miles east of Bonham, which is the county seat. It is also about 90 miles northeast of Dallas.

The city is built on mostly flat land with some gentle hills. You can see scattered trees around. The elevation of Honey Grove ranges from about 580 to 690 feet above sea level.

History of Honey Grove
The area of Honey Grove was first discovered by David Crockett in 1836. He was on his way to join the Texas Army in San Antonio. Crockett wrote letters back home about many trees filled with honey. This is how the town got its sweet name!
First Settlers and Town Founding
In 1837, Samuel Erwin became the first person to settle here. He was a friend of Davy Crockett. Samuel Erwin helped plan the town and was its first postmaster. Honey Grove officially became a town in 1873.
Davy Crockett's Connection
A monument in Crockett Park tells more about Davy Crockett's link to Honey Grove. It says he found wild bees and honey in hollow trees. He called the spot a "honey grove." Crockett hoped to settle there later, but he died at the Alamo a few weeks later.
Filming Location for One Tree Hill
In 2007, Honey Grove was a temporary filming spot for the TV show One Tree Hill. Honey Grove High School won a contest. The show's creator chose their school. Some of the main actors, like Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush, filmed scenes there.
Education in Honey Grove
Students in Honey Grove attend schools in the Honey Grove Independent School District. In 2009, the district built a new high school. They also added a new track and a gymnasium.
