History of Horace
Horace was started in 1886. This happened when the Missouri Pacific Railroad built tracks through the area. The city was named after Horace Greeley. He was a famous newspaper editor from New York. Greeley encouraged people to move west with his famous saying, "Go West, young man".
In 1887, Horace officially became a city. It wanted to be the county seat, which is the main town of a county. Even though Horace was bigger than nearby Tribune, Tribune became the county seat instead.
Still, Horace grew and did well. By 1888, about 300 people lived there. The town had its own newspaper and a bank.
In the early 1900s, Horace had many important buildings. These included a brick schoolhouse, a railroad roundhouse, and a YMCA building. There was also a hotel, a grocery store, and a Baptist church. Sadly, none of these old buildings are still standing today.
By 1910, Horace had 189 residents. It also had several stores, telegraph and express offices, and a money order office. The Missouri Pacific Railroad continued to make stops in Horace.
A post office opened in Horace in 1886. However, it closed on December 30, 1965. Later, the train depot also closed down.
In 2007, voters in Greeley County decided to combine the county and the city of Tribune into one government. But Horace chose not to join this plan.
