Hornbach Baumarkt AG is a big German company. It has stores where you can buy things for your home. These stores help you with "do-it-yourself" projects. Hornbach is one of the top places in Germany for home improvement.
Between March 2020 and February 2021, the company made over 5 billion Euros in sales. Hornbach Baumarkt AG owns and runs all these stores.
Today, Hornbach has 171 large stores. These stores also have garden centers. You can also shop online. They are located in nine different European countries. Most of their stores, 96 of them, are in Germany. Other countries include Austria, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, and Slovakia.
A company from the UK called Kingfisher plc used to own 21% of Hornbach. This was until March 2014. Kingfisher also owns other DIY chains like B&Q. They sold their share because they wanted to open their own stores in some of the same countries where Hornbach operates.
The History of Hornbach Stores
In the 1960s, the Hornbach family business was not doing very well. Otmar Hornbach, a grandson, had a great idea. He visited the United States and saw how popular "do-it-yourself" stores were there. He decided to open a similar store in Germany.
The company first started selling shares on the stock exchange in 1987. This helped them grow a lot. Since then, Hornbach has expanded into a chain with many stores. Otmar Hornbach, the person who had the idea for the DIY stores, passed away on August 2, 2014.
