Horton Peak is a mountain located in the beautiful White Cloud Mountains of Idaho. It is a prominent peak, meaning it stands out from the land around it. The mountain is nearly two miles high!

Where is Horton Peak?

This mountain is found in Custer County, Idaho. It is part of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. This area is famous for its stunning natural beauty. Horton Peak rises above the southeastern part of the Sawtooth Valley. It is west of the Sawtooth Range and Idaho State Highway 75. You can reach the summit by following a trail. This trail starts at the end of forest road 459 in the Sawtooth Valley.

History of Horton Peak

Horton Peak was named after a forest ranger named William H. Horton. He lived from 1869 to 1935. There is a special memorial for him at the Pole Creek Ranger Station. This station is about two miles southeast of Horton Peak.

In 1938, a fire lookout tower was built on the summit. The Civilian Conservation Corps built it. This group helped people find jobs during the Great Depression. The lookout was used by the U.S. Forest Service to spot wildfires. It was used until the 1970s. The old lookout tower still stands on the summit today.
