A Look Back in Time
Boelus was first known as Howard City. It was founded in 1885. This happened when people found out that a railroad would be built through the area. The railroad made it easier for people and goods to travel.
How Boelus Got Its Name
The name Boelus has an interesting story. Some people think it was named after the Belus River. Others believe it came from combining two family names: Boesen and Larson.

Boesen School: A One-Room Schoolhouse
The Boesen School was a special kind of school called a one-room schoolhouse. This means all students, no matter their age, learned together in one room with one teacher. The school was also known as District 28.
It operated for many years, from the fall of 1877 until the spring of 1953. The school was located about a mile from the Boesen family's home.
