Howser Spire is a group of three tall, rocky peaks. These peaks are made of granite, a very hard rock. Howser Spire is the highest mountain in an area called Bugaboo Spires.
You can find this mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It's in the Purcell Mountains, which are part of the larger Columbia Mountains. Howser Spire stands at the southwest edge of the Vowell Glacier.
The three peaks of Howser Spire have different heights. The North Tower is the tallest, reaching 3,412 meters (about 11,194 feet) high. The Central Tower is the shortest of the three. The South Tower is a bit shorter than the North Tower, at 3,292 meters (about 10,801 feet).
Howser Spire got its name from a nearby town called Howser. This town is located on Duncan Lake. A creek in the area, Howser Creek, also shares the name.
First Climbers of Howser Spire
The very first time someone successfully climbed the North Tower was in August 1916. This amazing feat was achieved by a team of climbers. The team included Conrad Kain, Albert MacCarthy, E. MacCarthy, J. Vincent, and Henry Frind. Climbing a mountain for the first time is called a "first ascent."
Famous Climbing Routes
Howser Spire is well-known for its challenging climbing routes. One very famous route is called the Beckey-Chouinard/West Buttress. This route is so important that it's mentioned in a famous climbing book. The book is called Fifty Classic Climbs of North America. Climbers from all over the world consider this route a true classic.
