The huayco tinamou (scientific name: Rhynchotus maculicollis) is a special bird. People also call it waypu in the Quechua language. You can find this bird living on grassy mountain ridges. It lives high up in the Andes mountains. Its home is in countries like Bolivia and Argentina.

About the Huayco Tinamou

What is a Tinamou?

All tinamous belong to the bird family called Tinamidae. These birds are also part of a larger group known as ratites. Other ratites include ostriches and emus. Unlike most other ratites, tinamous can fly. However, they are not very strong flyers. Scientists believe all ratites came from ancient flying birds. Tinamous are the closest living relatives to these old flying birds.

How it Got Its Name

The huayco tinamou was once thought to be a type of red-winged tinamou. But scientists noticed some important differences. The huayco tinamou has a unique song. Its head and neck also have black streaks and spots. Because of these differences, the SACC decided it was a separate species. The IUCN agreed with this decision in 2006.

Appearance

The huayco tinamou has a distinct look. Its head and neck are covered with black streaks and spots. This pattern helps to tell it apart from other similar birds.

Behavior and Life Cycle

What They Eat

Like other tinamous, the huayco tinamou finds its food on the ground. It eats fruit that has fallen from bushes. It also enjoys small amounts of invertebrates, like insects. Other foods include flower buds, soft leaves, seeds, and roots.

Reproduction

The male huayco tinamou is a very dedicated parent. He takes care of the eggs. These eggs might even come from different females. After the eggs hatch, the male raises the young birds. He cares for them until they are old enough to live on their own. The nest is usually on the ground. It is hidden in thick brush or among tree roots.

Where They Live

The huayco tinamou makes its home in the Andes mountains. You can find it in northwestern Argentina and Bolivia. These birds live at high altitudes. They prefer areas from about 1,000 to 3,000 meters (3,300 to 9,800 feet) above sea level. They like semi-arid scrub areas. They also live in fields where cereals are grown.

Conservation Status

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) keeps track of animal populations. They classify the huayco tinamou as "Least Concern". This means its population is stable. It is not currently at risk of disappearing. The area where it lives covers about 114,000 square kilometers (44,000 square miles).
