Hugh Keays-Byrne (born May 18, 1947 – died December 1, 2020) was an actor and film director from England and Australia. He moved to Australia in 1973 and became well-known for his roles in movies and TV shows.
He played the character Toad in the 1974 film Stone. He was also the main bad guy, Toecutter, in the 1979 movie Mad Max. Later, he played another main villain, Immortan Joe, in the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road. On TV, he was Grunchlk in the science fiction series Farscape.

Early Life and Stage Acting
Hugh Keays-Byrne was born in Srinagar, which was part of the British Raj (now India) at the time. His parents were British. When he was very young, his family moved to Britain.
He went to school in England and started his acting career on stage. From 1968 to 1972, he performed in many plays with the famous Royal Shakespeare Company. Some of these plays included As You Like It, King Lear, and Hamlet.
Becoming a Screen Actor
Hugh Keays-Byrne's first TV acting job was in Britain in 1967. In 1973, he traveled to Australia with the Royal Shakespeare Company for a play called A Midsummer Night's Dream. After the tour ended, he decided to stay in Australia.
In 1974, he acted in the TV show Essington. After that, he got roles in several movies like Stone (1974), Mad Dog Morgan (1976), and Snapshot (1979).
Playing Toecutter in Mad Max
In 1979, Hugh Keays-Byrne got a role that made him famous around the world. He played the violent gang leader "Toecutter" in the action-packed science fiction film Mad Max. This movie became a huge hit.
Movies and TV in the 1980s and 90s
During the 1980s, he continued to act in films such as The Chain Reaction (1980), Strikebound (1984), and The Blood of Heroes (1989). In 1992, he not only acted in the movie Resistance but also directed it.
In the mid-to-late 1990s, he appeared in several TV shows. These included Singapore Sling: Old Flames (1995), Moby Dick (1998), and Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1999).
Return to Mad Max
In the 2000s, he appeared in the science fiction TV series Farscape as a character named Grunchlk. He played this role again in the mini-series Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars.
In 2015, Hugh Keays-Byrne returned to the Mad Max movie series. He played the main villain, Immortan Joe, in the film Mad Max: Fury Road. This movie was very successful and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning 6 of them. Hugh Keays-Byrne was also nominated for the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain for his role.
Personal Life and Passing
Hugh Keays-Byrne passed away on December 1, 2020, when he was 73 years old. His partner, Christina, survived him.
