Huishue Lake (which means "bad place to live" in the Mapudungun language) is a beautiful lake found high up in the Andes mountains. It is located in southern Chile, near a place called Lago Ranco.
The lake is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Maihue Lake. It's also about 15 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of the Puyehue Volcano and 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of the border with Argentina.
A Famous Visitor
In the late 1940s, a very famous Chilean poet named Pablo Neruda found a hiding place near Huishue Lake. At that time, people who shared his political ideas were not allowed to speak freely, and he was in danger.
Neruda hid in a forestry estate known as Fundo Huishue. He stayed there for a few months, from late 1948 to early 1949.
On March 1, 1949, Pablo Neruda left Huishue. He then escaped from Chile by crossing the Ipela Pass into Argentina. From there, he traveled to Europe, where he lived in exile for some time.
