History of Humatas
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after a war with Spain. This war was called the Spanish–American War. It ended with a peace agreement known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Humatas and a nearby barrio called Dagüey had a combined population of 938 people.
