Hume Township's History
Hume Township is named after Walter Hume. He was the first white settler to arrive in this area. He built the very first house here in the 1850s.
Early Settlement and Government
Walter Hume also opened a hotel near the mouth of the Pinnebog River. This was likely the first hotel in this part of the county. The township officially started its government in 1860. The first election was held at Hume's store, and Walter Hume was elected as the first supervisor.
Forests and Fires
Long ago, the land in Hume Township was covered with tall pine trees. These trees were cut down and sent to sawmills in Port Crescent. The wood was used for building and other purposes. Later, two big fires caused a lot of damage. The Port Huron Fire of 1871 and the Thumb Fire of 1881 destroyed many of the remaining forests.
