Becoming Crown Prince

When King Hussein was alive, his brother Prince Hassan was expected to become king. But shortly before King Hussein passed away in 1999, he changed his mind. He chose his son Abdullah (Hussein's father) to be the next king.
When Abdullah became king, he first named his half-brother, Prince Hamzah, as the Crown Prince. However, in 2004, King Abdullah removed Hamzah from this role.
Jordan's laws say that the king's oldest son automatically becomes the Crown Prince. So, Hussein became the heir to the throne when his uncle Hamzah was no longer Crown Prince. On July 2, 2009, King Abdullah officially named Hussein as the Crown Prince.
