"I Love to Laugh" is a fun song from Walt Disney's 1964 movie Mary Poppins. It was written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman.

What is "I Love to Laugh"?

In the movie, the song is sung by "Uncle Albert" (Ed Wynn), "Bert" (Dick Van Dyke), and later Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews). They sing it while floating up to the ceiling! This happens because Uncle Albert gets so happy and laughs so much that he starts to float.

The Floating Scene

The idea is that laughter and happiness make Uncle Albert float into the air. It's like laughter makes you feel "lighter" and lifts your mood. If you think of something sad, you come back down to the ground.

The song says that laughing is great, even if Mary Poppins doesn't always approve of Uncle Albert's silly behavior. His laughter is so catchy that Bert and the Banks children also start floating!

A small part of the song is heard again near the end of the movie. This is when Mr. Dawes Sr. (also played by Dick Van Dyke) starts laughing. He laughs so hard at a joke that he floats around the office! His son later says he passed away while still laughing.

Where Else Does it Appear?

The scene where Uncle Albert floats is based on a chapter called "Laughing Gas" from the Mary Poppins book series by P.L. Travers. In the book, Uncle Albert (also called Mr. Wigg) floats because of too much "laughing gas". This isn't the real chemical gas, but a fun way to explain his floating.

Other Appearances

This musical part also shows up in the Sing-Along Songs video series. However, this song and Uncle Albert are not in the 2004 stage musical version of Mary Poppins.

A Funny Parody

A funny version of the song called "We Love To Smoke" was planned for an episode of The Simpsons. It was sung by Julie Kavner as Patty and Selma Bouvier. This parody was cut from the episode "Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(Annoyed Grunt)cious". You can find it on the album Go Simpsonic with The Simpsons as track 49.
