Different Kinds of Sundaes
Classic Ice Cream Sundae
The first sundaes were made with vanilla ice cream. They had a flavored sauce or syrup, whipped cream, and a maraschino cherry on top. Classic sundaes are often named after the syrup they use, like a cherry sundae or a chocolate sundae. These sundaes are usually served in a special tall, tulip-shaped glass. This glass is now often called a "sundae glass" because it's so famous for holding sundaes!
Banana Split Sundae
This dessert is made with a banana cut in half lengthwise. A classic banana split has strawberry ice cream with chocolate syrup, chocolate ice cream with crushed pineapple, and vanilla ice cream with strawberry syrup. Each scoop gets its own dollop of whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. It's a big, delicious treat!
American Parfait Sundae
An American parfait is a sundae served in a tall glass. It has layers of ice cream or yogurt, jelly, and yummy flavors like syrups. It can also have whipped cream, granola, fresh fruit, or even special liqueurs for adults.
Knickerbocker Glory Sundae
This ice cream sundae is popular in the United Kingdom. It's served in a large, tall glass with layers of ice cream, jelly, and cream. It's topped with syrup, nuts, whipped cream, and often a cherry.
Fresh Fruit Sundaes
You can make sundaes with fresh fruit that's been sliced or chopped and sweetened. The fruit sits for a while to make its own sweet syrup. These sundaes are often named after the fruit, like strawberry, peach, or raspberry sundaes. They are usually served in the summer, especially in places where those fruits grow.
You can also find special jarred fruit products made just for sundaes. These often come in a thick, sweet juice. Sometimes, sundaes are topped with canned fruits too.
Warm Sauce Sundaes
Warm sauce sundaes are super fun because the sauce is heated up before it's poured over the ice cream. This creates a cool mix of warm and cold, and different textures!
- Hot Fudge Sundae
- The hot fudge sundae is a very popular type of sundae. It usually has vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, warm chocolate sauce (that's the "hot fudge"), whipped cream, nuts, and a bright red maraschino cherry on top. People say that Clarence Clifton Brown invented this sundae in 1906. He owned C.C. Brown’s Ice Cream Shop in Hollywood, California. He made his own special fudge in big copper pots.
- Caramel Sundae
- This sundae is like a hot fudge sundae, but it uses warm caramel sauce instead of chocolate sauce. The other parts of the sundae stay the same.
- Turtle Sundae
- A turtle sundae mixes vanilla ice cream with warm fudge and warm caramel sauces. It's topped with toasted pecans. It's called a "turtle" sundae because it tastes like "turtle candy," which has pecans, caramel, and chocolate.
- Butterscotch Sundae
- This sundae is another version of the hot fudge sundae. It uses butterscotch sauce instead of chocolate sauce.
Black and White (Tin Roof Sundae)
This sundae has a scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and a scoop of chocolate ice cream with creamy white marshmallow sauce. It's topped with Spanish peanuts. The Tin Roof Sundae was created in 1916 by Harold Dean “Pinky” Thayer in Potter, Nebraska. He worked at his father's drug store. Some people say it was named after the tin ceiling in the store, and others say it was named after a stable across the street that had a tin roof. You can still enjoy a Tin Roof Sundae in Potter, Nebraska, at the same place, now called the Potter Sundry!
Brownie Sundae
A brownie sundae is a rich dessert made with warm brownies, vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, peanuts, hot fudge, and whipped cream. It's often finished with a maraschino cherry. If you use a blondie (a type of brownie without chocolate) instead of a regular brownie, then caramel sauce is used as the topping.
