Early Life and the Spanish Civil War
Ignacio Gallego was born in a town called Siles, in the Jaén Province of Spain. He lived during a time of great change in his country. When the Spanish Civil War started, he chose to fight for the Republican side.
After the war ended and Francisco Franco's side won, Gallego had to leave Spain. He went to Algeria, which was ruled by France at the time, and stayed in a refugee camp there. Later, he traveled to the Soviet Union, where he lived until 1945.
Return to Spain and Political Career
Ignacio Gallego secretly returned to Spain in 1976. His first public appearance in the country was on 25 April 1977. This was the day the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) was officially allowed to exist again.
He lived in Madrid and became a member of the Spanish parliament, called the Congress of Deputies. People from the district of Cordoba elected him in the general elections of 1977 and 1979.
Forming a New Party
Later, the main Communist Party of Spain (PCE) faced some difficulties and split into different groups. After this, Ignacio Gallego helped create a new political party called the Communist Party of the Peoples of Spain. This party followed a specific political idea known as Marxism-Leninism and was supportive of the Soviet Union.
Ignacio Gallego passed away in Madrid. The famous writer Rubén Gallego is his grandson.
