The Indochinese grey langur (scientific name: Trachypithecus crepusculus) is a type of Old World monkey. These monkeys live in parts of East Asia and Southeast Asia.

About the Indochinese Grey Langur

For a long time, scientists thought the Indochinese grey langur was the same species as Phayre's leaf monkey. However, a study in 2009 showed that it is actually a different species. This study also found that the Indochinese grey langur is a very old relative of other langurs in the T. obscurus group. Later studies suggest it might even be a hybrid species. This means it came from a mix of ancient obscurus-group langurs and the Tenasserim lutung (T. barbei).

Where Do Indochinese Grey Langurs Live?

You can find this langur species across a large area called Indochina. Their home stretches from northern Thailand all the way east to Vietnam. They also live west into eastern Myanmar. To the north, they can be found in southern China, south of the Salween River.

Home and Habits of the Langur

The Indochinese grey langur prefers to live in old-growth evergreen forests. Unlike some other langurs that live on rocky karst hills and spend a lot of time on the ground, these langurs mostly live in trees. They have an arboreal lifestyle, which means they spend most of their lives climbing and moving through the forest canopy.

Threats to Indochinese Grey Langurs

Sadly, there are not many Indochinese grey langurs left. Scientists believe there are only about 2,400 to 2,500 adult monkeys remaining. Their numbers are shrinking because of two main problems. One big threat is habitat destruction, which means their forest homes are being cut down or changed. The other major threat is hunting, especially in countries like Vietnam and Laos. Hunting has caused a very fast drop in the number of these beautiful monkeys.
