Long, long ago, the land that is now Kansas was home to many Native American tribes. In 1803, the United States bought a huge area of land, including most of modern Kansas, in what was called the Louisiana Purchase. This was a big step in the growth of the United States.

Kansas became an organized territory in 1854. Then, in 1861, Kansas officially joined the United States as the 34th state. A few years later, in 1867, McPherson County was created.

Founding and Naming of Inman

The city of Inman was first started in 1887. It was originally named Aiken. However, just two years later, in 1889, its name was changed to Inman. The city was named after Major Henry Inman. He was also the person for whom Lake Inman was named, which is about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of the town.

Railroad History and Its Impact

In 1887, a railroad company called the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main train line. This line went through Inman, connecting it to other towns like Herington and Pratt. The railroad was very important because it helped people and goods travel easily.

Over the years, this railroad line changed hands several times. It became part of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, which many local people still call the "Rock Island." Even though the company changed, the railroad continued to be a vital link for the community for a long time.
