In computer science, input means giving information or commands to a computer. Think of it like telling the computer what to do. When a computer or device gets a signal or instruction from outside, that action is called "input."
What is Computer Input?
Input is how we communicate with computers. It's the data or commands that a computer receives. This data can come from you, from other devices, or even from sensors. The computer then uses this input to do tasks. Without input, a computer wouldn't know what to do!
Common Input Devices
Many devices help us send input to computers. These are called input devices. Here are some common examples you might use every day:
- Mouse: Used to move a pointer on the screen and click things.
- Keyboard: Used to type letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Touchscreen: Allows you to interact directly with the screen using your finger.
- Microphone: Captures sound, like your voice, and turns it into digital data.
- Webcam: Captures video and still images.
- Touchpad: A flat surface on laptops that acts like a mouse.
- Image scanner: Converts physical documents or images into digital files.
- Trackball: A stationary ball you roll to move the pointer on the screen.
Even inside a computer, some parts act as input for other parts. For example, the power button on your computer is an input. When you press it, it sends a signal to the processor or the power supply. This signal tells them to start working.

In many computer languages, the word "input" is a special command. For example, in languages like Python or Visual Basic, you can use an "input" command. This command tells the computer to wait for you to type something. Whatever you type then becomes data that the program can use. It's a way for programs to get information from the user.
