The Invictus Games are a special international sports event. They started in 2014. These games are for soldiers, sailors, and air force members who were hurt or became sick while serving their country. This includes those still serving and those who have left the military.

The name 'Invictus' comes from a Latin word meaning 'unconquered'. This name was chosen to show the strong spirit of these service members. It highlights what they can achieve even after their injuries.

Prince Harry, the Ministry of Defence, and Sir Keith Mills helped create the Invictus Games. Prince Harry got the idea in 2013. He visited the Warrior Games in the United States. There, he saw how sports could help people heal, both mentally and physically.

Prince Harry officially announced the Games on March 6, 2014. This happened at London's Copper Box arena. This arena was also used for the 2012 Olympics. Prince Harry wanted to bring a similar international sports event to the United Kingdom. He had seen a British team compete at the US Warrior Games in Colorado in 2013.

The event was planned in just ten months. It had support from Boris Johnson, who was the Mayor of London at the time. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Ministry of Defence also helped.

Money for the Games came from a special fund called the Endeavour Fund. This fund helps veterans recover. The British government also gave money from bank fines. Jaguar Land Rover and Boeing also became sponsors.

Prince Harry said the Games would "show the power of sport to inspire recovery." He also said they would help people "demonstrate life beyond disability." He hoped the Games would make sure injured troops are not forgotten. This was especially important as Britain's involvement in the War in Afghanistan was ending.
