Space-filling model of the iodate anion

Iodate is a special kind of ion, which is an atom or group of atoms that has an electric charge. Think of it like a tiny magnet with a positive or negative pull! The chemical formula for iodate is IO3-. This means it has one iodine atom and three oxygen atoms, and the whole group has a negative charge.

Inside the iodate ion, the iodine atom is in what chemists call a "+5 oxidation state". This is a way to describe how many electrons an atom has gained or lost when it forms a chemical bond.

What is Iodate?

Iodate is a negatively charged ion. It is made up of iodine and oxygen atoms joined together. Because it has a negative charge, it can easily combine with positively charged ions to form new chemical compounds. These compounds are often called "salts."

How Iodate is Formed

Iodate can be made through a chemical process called reduction. This happens when a substance gains electrons. For example, iodate can be formed by reducing another iodine-containing ion called periodate.

Iodate ions are quite similar to chlorate ions, which are made of chlorine and oxygen. Both iodate and chlorate belong to a family of chemicals known as "halates."

Iodate in Chemical Reactions

When iodate compounds mix with acids, they react to create iodic acid. Iodic acid is a stronger acid than many common ones. Iodates are essentially the "salts" of iodic acid. A common example of an iodate salt is sodium iodate, which is sometimes used in everyday products.

Where Do We Find Iodate?

Iodates are important in several ways, even if you don't always hear about them directly. One of the most well-known uses of an iodate compound is in iodized salt.

Iodate in Iodized Salt

Iodine is a very important nutrient that our bodies need to stay healthy. It helps our thyroid gland work correctly. However, iodine is not always naturally present in enough amounts in our food, especially in areas far from the ocean.

To help people get enough iodine, a tiny amount of potassium iodate or sodium iodate is added to table salt. This is why it's called "iodized salt." When you use iodized salt in your cooking, you're getting the iodine your body needs. These iodate compounds are stable and safe to add to food in small amounts.
