The Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing is a very important bridge in British Columbia, Canada. It is also called the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge or the Second Narrows Bridge. This bridge crosses the Burrard Inlet, connecting Vancouver to the North Shore cities like District of North Vancouver, City of North Vancouver, and West Vancouver. It's the second bridge to cross this water.
Building the Bridge
Building the bridge started in 1957. It was a huge project. The bridge was designed as a truss and cantilever bridge. This means it uses strong triangles and arms to support its weight.
The bridge carries six lanes of British Columbia Highway 1. It also has paths for people walking and riding bikes. The main part of the bridge is 335 meters (1,099 feet) long. The total length of the bridge is 1,292 meters (4,239 feet).
A Sad Day During Construction
During construction, on June 17, 1958, a part of the bridge collapsed. This was a very sad event. Many workers fell into the water from about 30 meters (100 feet) up. Sadly, 19 people lost their lives during this accident.
The bridge finally opened on August 25, 1960. In 1994, it was officially renamed the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing. This new name honors the brave workers who died while building it.
