A Look at Irvington's Past

The first post office in this area opened on February 16, 1885. It was called Merino, named after the nearby Mt. Merino Seminary.

However, two local business owners, R.M. Jolly and Edgar L. Bennett, had a different plan. They knew a railroad, the Louisville, St. Louis, and Texas Railroad, was coming through. So, they bought 315 acres of farmland in the area.

Working with railroad employees, they designed a new community during the winter of 1888–89. They named this new place Irvington. It was named after Irvington, New York, which was the hometown of the railroad's main engineer, Eugene Cornwall. The state assembly officially made Irvington a city in 1889.

In 1933, the Holy Guardian Angel Roman Catholic church was moved. It came from a nearby place called Mount Merino to High Street in Irvington. The church in Mount Merino needed too many repairs. Moving it closer to where people lived made more sense.
