Isaac Ross Moores Jr. (born February 14, 1831 – died July 25, 1884) was an American businessman and politician. He was born in Illinois and moved to the Oregon Territory in 1852. In Oregon, he became a member of the Oregon House of Representatives. He even served as the Speaker of that important group.

Isaac Moores Jr.'s Early Life

Isaac Moores Jr. was born on February 14, 1831, in Danville, Illinois. His parents were Isaac senior and Jane Alexander. He had several brothers and sisters.

Isaac went to school in Illinois. When he was about 19, in 1850, he went to California. He hoped to find gold there, but he didn't become rich. He returned to Illinois in 1852.

Moving to Oregon

In 1852, Isaac and his family traveled on the famous Oregon Trail. They arrived in Portland in November. Isaac decided to live in Yamhill County. There, he worked as a surveyor, which means he measured land.

In October 1854, Isaac moved to Salem, which is the capital city. He worked as a clerk in a store owned by J. N. McDonald. In 1856, he and his brother John bought the store together.

Isaac also became the postmaster for Salem. He held this job from April 1855 until October 1858. On September 2, 1856, he married Ellen R. Lamon. They had seven children together.

Public Service and Politics

When the American Civil War started in 1861, Isaac joined the Oregon Volunteer Militia. He was chosen to be a colonel, which is a high-ranking officer. However, his militia stayed in Oregon and did not fight in any battles.

In 1862, Isaac was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives. He was a member of the Republican Party and represented Marion County. In 1864, he was elected again. This time, he became the Speaker of the House. This means he was the leader of the House of Representatives. He also served as Speaker during a special meeting of the legislature in 1865. His brother, John, also became a politician later. John served in the Oregon State Senate and was even the mayor of Salem.

Later Years and Work

In 1866, Isaac sold his store business. The governor, George Lemuel Woods, then appointed him to a new job. Isaac became a clerk for the State Board of Land Commissioners.

The next year, in 1867, he helped start the Oregon Central Railroad. He even served as the president of this railroad for a while. Isaac left the State Board in 1870. After that, he became a land commissioner for the Oregon and California Railroad. He stayed in this job until he passed away.

Isaac was also a member of several community groups, like the Masons and Odd Fellows. He was also on the Common Council of Salem. Isaac Ross Moores Jr. died in Portland on July 25, 1884. He was 53 years old. He was buried at the Salem Pioneer Cemetery, where his father was also buried.
