Early Life and Learning Music
Isaac Slade went to the University of Colorado Denver. He studied music and the entertainment industry there. He earned a special degree in music.
Isaac started singing when he was eight years old. He began playing the piano at age eleven. This happened after he temporarily lost his voice. He wrote his very first song when he was sixteen. He also learned to play the guitar when he was in high school.
Starting a Band: The Fray
Isaac Slade first joined a band called Ember. His future bandmates, Dave Welsh and Ben Wysocki, were also in this band. Ember soon broke up.
Later, in 2002, Isaac met his old school friend, Joe King, in a record store. Joe was also a singer and guitarist. The two started playing music together often. This led to them writing songs. They then added Isaac's younger brother, Caleb, on bass guitar. Zach Johnson joined them on drums.
Dave Welsh and Ben Wysocki later rejoined Isaac and Joe. Together, they officially formed the band The Fray. They soon released an album called Movement EP. In 2003, they released another album, Reason EP. This album received good reviews from local critics.
Even with good reviews, the band found it hard to get a song played on the radio. A Denver radio station, KTCL, turned down eight of their songs. The band then decided to send them a song called "Cable Car." This song was played on a KTCL radio show that featured local bands. Soon after, the radio station got many requests for the song. The band changed the song's name to "Over My Head (Cable Car)". By the end of 2005, it was KTCL's most played song of the year.
Moving On: A New Chapter
On March 12, 2022, Isaac Slade announced on Instagram that he had left The Fray. He explained that he had been having panic attacks while performing on stage. His last concert with the band was on May 14, 2022. It took place at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan, Illinois.
Since leaving the band, Isaac now runs a record store. It is located on Vashon Island, Washington.
Who Inspired Isaac?
Isaac Slade once said in an interview that one of the first songs that inspired him was "Swallowed" by the band Bush. He felt that the lyrics and music moved him deeply. This inspiration helped him decide to become a musician.
He wrote on the AOL Radio Blog:
As a boy "Swallowed" was my siren's song. I was a sheltered church child and here's this man talking about living the life his way, doing whatever he felt like doing. Bush wasn't allowed in my house either, which made it that much more mysterious.
Other bands and artists that influenced his music include Nine Inch Nails, Queen, Radiohead, R.E.M., Counting Crows, U2, and Led Zeppelin.
Helping Others Through Music
Isaac Slade used his musical talent to help others. In 2010, he performed on a new version of the famous 1985 charity song "We Are the World." He joined 85 other artists on February 1, 2010. They recorded the song to help victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
On October 27, 2013, Isaac and The Fray played at the Colorado Flood Benefit Concert. This event raised almost $500,000. The money went to help people affected by the flood.
His Views on Politics
Isaac Slade sees himself as a centrist. This means he often holds views that are in the middle, not strongly leaning to one side. He often votes for candidates who are not part of the main political parties. These are called independent candidates.
For example, Isaac supported Neal Simon. Simon was running as an independent candidate for senator from Maryland. This was during the 2018 elections.
