Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Isaac Slover (born 1780, died 1854) was an American fur trader in the 1800s. He was one of the first American trappers allowed into New Mexico. He was part of an important journey called the Glenn-Fowler Expedition. Slover also lived in Taos, New Mexico for a time.

Who Was Isaac Slover?

Isaac Slover was an adventurous person who explored the American Southwest. He worked as a fur trader, which meant he hunted animals like beavers for their valuable fur. This fur was then sold to make hats and clothing. His travels helped open up new trading routes in the early 1800s.

Early Adventures as a Trapper

Slover was one of the first American trappers to get official permission to enter New Mexico. This was a big deal at the time. He joined the Glenn-Fowler Expedition, led by Hugh Glenn and Jacob Fowler. This journey helped map out new areas for trade and trapping.

He was also one of the first trappers to make Taos, New Mexico his home. Taos was a key center for fur trading in the Southwest.

Exploring the Southwest

Isaac Slover worked with many other famous trappers. In 1824, he explored the Colorado River area with Ewing Young and William Wolfskill. They were looking for new places to trap.

Later, in 1828, he joined James Ohio Pattie and his father Sylvester Pattie. They traveled along the Gila River and the lower Colorado River. During this trip, they faced challenges. They needed food and water, so they hid their furs. They then went west towards Baja California. There, they were held by authorities in San Diego from late 1828 to 1829.

Life in California

After his time in New Mexico, Slover traveled across the Southwest. He used the Old Spanish Trail to reach Alta California. This journey helped create new overland trade routes between New Mexico and California.

By 1843, Isaac Slover had settled down with his family in California. They made their home near San Bernardino. He continued to hunt and trap in the area. Sadly, he died in 1854 from injuries after a bear attack. It is believed he is buried in the cemetery at Agua Mansa. A nearby landmark, Slover Mountain, was named in his honor.
