Isabella of Castile, Duchess of York (1355 – 23 December 1392) was a Spanish princess. She was the daughter of King Peter and María de Padilla. Isabella moved to England with her older sister, Constance. Constance married John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster. Isabella then married John of Gaunt's younger brother, Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York.

Life of Isabella of Castile

Isabella was the youngest of three daughters born to Peter of Castile, who was the King of Castile. Her mother was María de Padilla.

Marriage to Edmund of Langley

In 1371, Isabella's older sister, Constance, married John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster. Constance claimed the throne of Castile after their father died. Isabella traveled with her sister to England.

On 11 July 1372, Isabella married Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York. She was about 17 years old. Edmund was the fifth son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainault. Their marriage took place at Wallingford, Oxfordshire. This marriage was part of a plan to support the English claim to the crown of Castile.

Later Life and Legacy

Isabella was named a Lady of the Garter in 1379. This was a special honor given by the English monarch.

In her will, Isabella named King Richard II as her heir. She asked him to give her younger son, Richard, a yearly payment. The King agreed to this request. However, King Richard II was removed from power in 1399. Because of this, Isabella's son Richard did not receive more support from the new king, Henry IV.

Isabella died on 23 December 1392, when she was about 37 years old. She was buried at the priory of the Dominicans in Kings Langley.

Isabella is shown in Shakespeare's play Richard II. In the play, she is still alive in late December 1399. This is not historically accurate, as she died in 1392.
