Isabelle Waldberg (1911–1990) was a talented French-Swiss artist. She was known for her sculptures and was connected to a special art movement called surrealism.

Isabelle Waldberg's Life Journey

Isabelle Farner was born in Oberstammheim, Switzerland, in 1911. She started her art studies in Zurich with a teacher named Hannes Meyer. Later, in 1936, she moved to Paris, France, a famous city for artists. There, she continued her studies at different art schools, including the Académie Colarossi and the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere.

In 1937, Isabelle also studied art in Florence, Italy. When she returned to Paris, she met many important artists and thinkers. These included Alberto Giacometti, Georges Bataille, André Masson, and her future husband, Patrick Waldberg. From 1938 to 1940, she studied sociology (the study of how societies work) and ethnography (the study of different cultures) at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes. She also wrote for a magazine called Acéphale.

Time in New York City

In 1941, Isabelle traveled to New York City and lived there for five years. During this time, she was inspired by other surrealist artists who were also living there, like Andre Breton, Max Ernst, and Marcel Duchamp. She began creating unique sculptures called "constructions." These were made from beech wood sticks tied together.

Her "constructions" were shown at a famous gallery called Art Of This Century in 1943, which was owned by Peggy Guggenheim. Isabelle also contributed to a magazine called VVV in 1944. Her very first art exhibition was held at The Art of This Century gallery.

Return to Paris

Isabelle Waldberg moved back to Paris in 1946. She even worked in Marcel Duchamp's old art studio. From 1947 to 1948, she helped edit a surrealist magazine called Da Costa Encyclopédique with the writer Robert Lebel.
