Isla de Maipo is a charming town and commune located in the Talagante Province of central Chile. It is part of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. This area is known for its beautiful rural landscapes and strong agricultural traditions.

Exploring Isla de Maipo's Geography
Isla de Maipo is found in the Chilean Central Valley. It is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Santiago, Chile's capital city. The town is also about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the city of Talagante.
The commune covers an area of about 125.5 square kilometers (48.5 square miles). Most of Isla de Maipo is rural. You will see many old colonial houses, working farms, and vineyards. Farming is a very important activity for most people living here.
The Maipo River is very important to this area. It helps support a large population in the metropolitan region. The river also provides water for irrigation, which means it helps water the farms and vineyards.

Isla de Maipo is home to some wonderful traditions that bring people together.
Fiesta de La Virgen de La Merced
One important tradition is the Fiesta de La Virgen de La Merced. This festival happens every year on the last Sunday of September. It attracts over 80,000 visitors. People come from all over the region, Chile, and even other countries to celebrate.
La Fiesta de la Vendimia (Grape Harvest Festival)
Another popular event is La Fiesta de la Vendimia, which means the Grape Harvest Festival. This festival celebrates the grape harvest each year. It brings together local people and tourists from around the world.
The festival is a great chance to try the local food and, especially, the high-quality wines made in the commune. The main town square, called Plaza de Armas, turns into a big outdoor dining area. You can enjoy folk music and other types of music while you eat and celebrate.
Population and Community Life
According to the 2002 census by the National Statistics Institute, Isla de Maipo had 25,798 residents. This included 13,095 men and 12,703 women.
Most of the people, about 18,865 (73.1%), lived in urban areas. The remaining 6,933 (26.9%) lived in rural areas. Between 1992 and 2002, the population of Isla de Maipo grew by 26.8%. This means 5,454 more people came to live here.
How Isla de Maipo is Governed
Isla de Maipo is a commune, which is a local administrative area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years.
From 2012 to 2016, the alcalde was Carlos Adasme Godoy, from the PDC. He worked with a council of elected members to make decisions for the commune.
