History of Islandia
Islandia became an official village in April 1985. This happened after a company called CA Technologies built its main office nearby. Local residents wanted to form their own village.
Becoming a Village: The Early Years
On September 16, 1980, residents presented a petition to officials in the Town of Islip. Over 432 people signed the petition, which was more than enough. They also paid a $1,000 fee.
However, some Islip officials did not like the idea. The Town of Islip even tried to stop Islandia from becoming a village. This led to a legal disagreement.
It took more than three years for the issue to be settled. In December 1984, the Town of Islip finally agreed. They asked Islandia residents to promise not to exclude minority groups. After this, a vote was held. Most residents voted to become a village.
In April 1985, Islandia officially became an incorporated village. Warren Raymond is known as its founding father. Islandia was the first new village on Long Island in over 15 years. The last one before it was Lake Grove in 1968.
Original Homes and School Districts
Around 1963, a company called Levitt & Sons built about 500 homes in Islandia. Buyers were told their children would attend the Hauppauge Union Free School District. However, the homes actually became part of the Central Islip Union Free School District.
The area was even given the Central Islip ZIP code 11722. It was considered part of Central Islip until Islandia became its own village in 1985.
New Developments: The Casino
In August 2016, the village board approved plans for a new casino. It was to be built at the Marriott hotel. Some people in the community worried about crime and traffic. Others supported the idea, as it was the first new casino in Suffolk County.
Marriott International sold the hotel property. They sold it to Delaware North for over $40 million. Marriott has a company rule against gambling. On February 27, 2017, the Jake's 58 casino opened. It has 250 video lottery terminals.
