The Isle Royale Light, also known as the Menagerie Island Light, is a lighthouse located inside Isle Royale National Park in northern Michigan, United States. It helps guide ships safely on Lake Superior.
Where is the Isle Royale Light?
This lighthouse stands on Menagerie Island. This island is the most eastern of a group of small islands. These islands are found at the entrance of Siskiwit Bay, which is on the southern side of Isle Royale.
The living area of the lighthouse has strong steel shutters. These shutters protect the building from damage during very bad storms. Lake Superior can have extremely rough weather!
A Look Back: History of the Light
The Isle Royale Light was built in 1875. It was made from red sandstone. The U.S. Coast Guard built it to help ships navigate.
In 1983, this important lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as a special historical site.
