Early Life and Inspiration
When Ismail was nine years old, his parents separated. He then moved to Melbourne, Australia. His mother's parents raised him there until he was sixteen.
His grandfather worked as a butcher. His grandmother was a housewife who loved to cook. Food was a very important part of their family life. This love for food and cooking inspired Ismail to become a chef.
Starting His Culinary Journey
Ismail began working at age sixteen. His first job was washing dishes in Sydney Road in Melbourne. He earned $60 a week.
After that, he started an apprenticeship. This means he trained to be a chef. He worked at an Ottoman restaurant in Canberra. There, he learned from Şerif Kaya, a modern Turkish chef.
Opening His Own Restaurants
Ismail Tosun later opened his own restaurant. It was called Eminem and was located in Perth. This restaurant became very popular. It even won the 'best new talent' award in 2007. However, he closed Eminem soon after receiving the award.
After leaving Perth, Tosun traveled to Istanbul for a short time. When he came back to Australia, he settled in Collingwood, Victoria. There, he opened a new Turkish restaurant. He named this new restaurant Gigibaba.
