The Name of Ismay
The town's name is a mix of two names: Isabella and May. These were the daughters of Albert J. Earling. He was an important leader for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway.
Other towns were also named after people connected to this railway. These include Earling, Iowa, Marmarth, North Dakota, and Alberton, Montana.
Joe, Montana Stunt
In 1993, a radio station in Kansas City, KYYS, did a fun publicity stunt. They convinced the town of Ismay to unofficially change its name to Joe, Montana. This was a tribute to the famous NFL quarterback Joe Montana.
Where Ismay Is Located
Ismay is located in eastern Montana. It sits between the towns of Baker, Montana and Terry.
The town is on the BNSF Railway's Hettinger Subdivision. This railway line used to be a main route for the Milwaukee Road railway.
