Discover Terry's Past
The area where Terry is now was first called Joubert's Landing. This name honored the person who set up a supply stop there. It was a useful spot along the Yellowstone River for people carrying goods. They traveled from Bismarck to Miles City.
When the Northern Pacific Railway built its transcontinental rail line in 1881, the town got a new name. It was named after Alfred Howe Terry. He was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He also led an expedition in 1876 related to George Armstrong Custer’s campaign against Native Americans.
Later, Terry became a town with two railroads. The Milwaukee Road built another transcontinental line through the town. This happened in the early 1900s. A very serious train accident in Montana's history, called the Custer Creek train wreck, happened near Terry on this line in 1938.
