In 2020, about 126 people lived there. The name "Istachatta" comes from a Seminole word that means "man snake."
Where is Istachatta?
Istachatta is located in the northeast part of Hernando County. It sits right next to the Withlacoochee River.
The community is about 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Brooksville, which is the main city in Hernando County. It's also about 14 miles (23 km) south of Inverness.

Istachatta is quite small, covering an area of about 0.35 square miles (0.91 square kilometers). A small part of this area is water, mostly from the river.
A cool feature of Istachatta is that it's located along the Withlacoochee State Trail. This trail is a long path built on old railroad lines. It's great for biking, walking, and enjoying nature, stretching north into Citrus County and south into Pasco County.
