Ivan Aleksandrovich Pyryev (Russian: Ива́н Алекса́ндрович Пы́рьев; November 17, 1901 – February 7, 1968) was a famous Soviet-Russian film director and screenwriter. He was known for making movies that showed the good side of life in the Soviet Union. He won six Stalin Prizes for his work. For a while, he was the most important person in the Soviet film industry. He also led the Mosfilm studios from 1954 to 1957.

Life and Film Career

Ivan Pyryev was born in a place called Kamen-na-Obi, which was part of the Russian Empire back then. Today, it's in Altai Krai, Russia.

When he was young, he started acting on stage. He worked with famous directors like Vsevolod Meyerhold and Sergei Eisenstein. He even acted in Eisenstein's very first short film, Glumov's Diary. Pyryev also worked behind the camera, helping with film production. He directed his first silent film, Strange Woman, in 1929.

Popular Musical Comedies

In the 1930s and 1940s, Pyryev became very successful. He was known for directing popular musical comedies. Many of these films starred his wife, Marina Ladynina. Even during World War II, when the Soviet film industry moved to Alma-Ata, Pyryev continued to make cheerful and popular movies.

One of his wartime films was Six O'Clock after the War is Over (1944). In this movie, a couple separated by war plans to meet at 6 PM on Victory Day. The film even shows the victory celebrations at the end.

Showcasing Soviet Life

Pyryev's films often showed an ideal picture of life in the Soviet Union. Movies like They Met in Moscow (1941), Ballad of Siberia (1947), and Cossacks of the Kuban (1949) were often shown on TV.

  • They Met in Moscow was the last film made in the Soviet Union before the German invasion. It tells the story of a Russian pig farmer and a Chechen shepherd who fall in love at a big agricultural exhibition. The movie has memorable music by Isaak Dunaevsky and Tikhon Khrennikov.
  • Cossacks of the Kuban made Klara Luchko a star. It showed a very glamorous view of life on a southern collective farm, called a kolkhoz.

Later Works and Adaptations

After Joseph Stalin passed away, Pyryev started making movies based on famous books. He directed two well-known films adapted from novels by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

  • The Idiot (1958) starred Yuri Yakovlev.
  • The Brothers Karamazov (1969) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It also won a special prize at the 6th Moscow International Film Festival.

Pyryev passed away in Moscow at age 66. The Brothers Karamazov was not finished when he died. The actors Kirill Lavrov and Mikhail Ulyanov helped complete the movie. His wife, Lionella Pyryeva, who played a role in The Brothers Karamazov, later married Oleg Strizhenov.

Praise for His Work

Film critic Grigori Roshal once said that Pyryev's comedies showed that "everyone has the right to be happy." He added that in Pyryev's home country, happiness was not stopped by differences in background or social class.
