History of Ivanhoe
Early Settlers and Economy
The area where Ivanhoe is today was first settled in 1739. People from Scotland traveled northwest through the Cape Fear Valley to find new homes. When they arrived in Ivanhoe, they found many longleaf pine trees.
These trees were very important for the local economy. People used the pine trees to make products like tar, charcoal, turpentine, and timber. These products were then sent down the Black River. The river connected Ivanhoe to seaports like Brunswick Town and later Wilmington. This allowed them to trade their goods.

Several important buildings and places in Ivanhoe are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized for their historical importance. In 1986, the Beatty-Corbett House, the Black River Presbyterian and Ivanhoe Baptist Churches, and Delta Farm were added to this list.
