Club Teams
Ivica Horvat played for Dinamo Zagreb from 1945 to 1957. After that, in 1957, he moved to Germany. There, he joined Eintracht Frankfurt and played for them until he stopped playing football.
Playing for His Country
Horvat played for the Yugoslavia national team from 1946 to 1956. He played in 60 games for his country. He also took part in two World Cup tournaments: in 1950 and 1954.
He also won a silver medal with the Yugoslav team at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. In the final game, Yugoslavia lost to Hungary.
During the 1954 World Cup, in a quarter-final match, Horvat accidentally scored a goal for the other team. This is called an "own goal." It happened in the 10th minute of the game. For a long time, this was the fastest own goal in World Cup history.
His last game for Yugoslavia was a friendly match against England in November 1956.
Becoming a Manager
From 1961 to 1979, Ivica Horvat worked as a football manager. He started as an assistant manager at Eintracht Frankfurt. In 1964, he became the main manager there. However, the team did not do well in the Bundesliga, so he was replaced in 1965.
Later, with Dinamo Zagreb, he helped the team win the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1967. This competition was a bit like the UEFA Cup that we know today. They won against Leeds United in the final games.
In 1971, he returned to the Bundesliga to manage FC Schalke 04. With Schalke, he won the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) in 1972. His team also finished second in the league that year.
In 1975, Horvat moved to manage Rot-Weiss Essen. He stayed there until September 1976.
He returned to Schalke in 1978. But because the team was not playing well, and they lost a big derby game, he was fired in March. After this, Horvat decided to stop his career as a manager.
