Biography
Early Life and Family
Iziaslav was the oldest son of Yaroslav the Wise, a very famous Grand Prince. His mother was Ingegerd Olofsdotter, who was from Sweden. Iziaslav became ruler after his older half-brother, Vladimir, died before their father.
In 1043, Iziaslav's father, Yaroslav, made an important agreement with King Casimir I the Restorer of Poland. This agreement recognized that a region called Cherven belonged to Kiev. To make the agreement stronger, there was a double marriage. King Casimir married Yaroslav's sister, Dobronega. And Iziaslav married Gertrude, who was King Casimir's sister. Iziaslav and Gertrude had three children: Yaropolk, Mstislav, and Sviatopolk.
Legal Code and Monastery
Iziaslav helped create a set of laws called "Pravda Yaroslavichiv" (meaning "Justice of Yaroslav's Sons"). This was part of the first major legal code of Kievan Rus', known as Ruska Pravda.
He is also known for helping to start the Kiev Pechersk Monastery. This was a very important monastery. Prince Iziaslav gave a whole mountain to a group of monks. These monks were led by Saint Anthony of Kiev, who came from Mount Athos. They built a monastery there with help from architects from Constantinople. The monastery started in a cave overlooking the Dnieper River.
Ruling as Grand Prince
When his father, Yaroslav the Wise, died, his lands were divided among his three oldest living sons: Iziaslav, Sviatoslav, and Vsevolod. They formed a group called the "Yaroslavichi triumvirate." This group ruled Kievan Rus' together for about 20 years.
Challenges and Return to Power
In 1068, there was a large uprising in Kiev. Because of this, Iziaslav was removed from power and had to escape to Poland. But in 1069, he returned to Kiev with help from the Polish army and took back his rule.
However, his brothers removed him from power again in 1073. Iziaslav then asked for help from powerful leaders in Europe, like the German king Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor, the Polish king Bolesław II the Bold, and Pope Gregory VII.
In 1075, the Pope sent Iziaslav a crown, making him the first King of Rus'. He managed to take back Kiev once more in 1076. But he soon died in 1078 during a conflict with other princes, Oleg Sviatoslavich and Boris Vyacheslavich.
Children
Iziaslav had the following children with Gertrude of Poland:
- Yaropolk Izyaslavich
- Mstislav (died 1069): He was a Prince of Novgorod for a time.
- Eupraxia: She might have married Mieszko Bolesławowic in 1088.
- Sviatopolk II of Kiev: He later became a Grand Prince of Kiev.
