History of Jájome Alto

How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.

After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully integrated into the country.

Population Changes Over Time

In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census in Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. This first count showed that 1,246 people lived in Jájome Alto barrio.

Over the years, the population of Jájome Alto has changed. Here's how many people lived there during different census years:

Historical population
Census Pop.
1900 1,246
1950 1,221
1980 545
1990 681 25.0%
2000 654 −4.0%
